My Favorite Drugstore Makeup

by Melissa

What drugstore items have become your beauty staples?

Drugstore beauty items have improved greatly in recent years. There are many products that I simply adore that can be found at your local drugstore much, much more cheaply than over-hyped high end products. Here are some of my favorites…

Moisturizer: Boots Original Formula Rose Vanishing Day Cream. I love this but I wish it had sunscreen. I’m almost certain this is being discontinued so I am in search of the next great drugstore moisturizer. Suggestions?

Lip Balm: Aquaphor Healing Ointment. This ointment has saved my lips. I put a little on at night and I wake up to the softest lips I’ve ever known. I can’t believe I went so long without this. It is a must have in everyone’s beauty bag.

Primer: Hard Candy Sheer Envy Primer. A high quality, cheap primer. Stock up when you see it as it sells out often.

Concealer: Maybelline Mineral Power Concealer. I have dark circles. I hate them. I constantly try new concealers in the hopes that I will find magic in a tube that will erase any hint of dark circle from my face. This is the closest I’ve come to that. This concealer even out-performs much more expensive concealers. I live in fear that Maybelline will discontinue it.

Foundation: Revlon PhotoReady Foundation. I admit, I don’t really like to wear foundation too often. But when I do, PhotoReady is what I reach for. It offers me light to medium coverage with a dewy, glowing finish. It makes my skin look a bit younger, so it is a winner.

Powder: Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation. Yes, this is a foundation but I use it as a powder. It is a finely milled pressed powder that I use to set my makeup. I don’t think this would offer much coverage at all if one were to use it as foundation alone, but perhaps if you didn’t need much. This powder has sunscreen, which is nice.

Blush: Sonia Kashuk Beautifying Blush in Flamingo. I’ve raved about this blush previously but I just can’t say enough how much I love it. It is a sheer but bright pink with no shimmer or glitter but it doesn’t look dry or powdery on. I find that I can build up the color if I want a more vibrant look or apply lightly for a more natural blush. Love it.

Highlighter: Hard Candy Blush Crush in Pin-up. This is marketed as a blush but it is a shimmery champagne color that doesn’t really show up as a blush on me. It looks phenomenal as a cheek highlighter though. Shimmery but not glittery, this reminds me of MAC Skinfinish.

Bronzer: Hard Candy So Baked Bronzer in Hulahu. A lovely bronzer that is lightly shimmery. This looks really natural and not cakey for fake at all.

Eyeshadow: L’Oreal HiP Eyeshadows (all, but especially Electrified). I will admit, eyeshadows are one beauty product where it usually pays to go high end. Most drugstore eyeshadows are chalky with very little color payoff. They are almost always disappointing. L’Oreal’s HiP eyeshadows are some of the most vibrant and pigmented you can get at the drugstore. Their metallic duo, Electrified, is sought after by many beauty bloggers. With good reason, it is beautiful, pigmented, and affordable.

Eyeliner: Revlon Colorstay Eyeliner. This is a good standard black eyeliner that stays put on me all day. I also like Revlon’s Colorstay marker eyeliner if I’m going for more of a retro look.

Mascara: L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara. I always go back to this mascara. When something new comes out, I will rush to the store to try it, but really, L’Oreal’s Voluminous Mascara has everything I want. A close second place is Maybelline’s Lash Stiletto if you’re looking for length, rather than volume.

Lipstick: Revlon Matte Lipstick in Strawberry Suede. I love matte lipstick and I love that I can now find a great matte lipstick at the drugstore. Revlon overall makes some of the best drugstore lipsticks regardless of the formula. Also try Revlon’s Pink in the Afternoon for the perfect light pink.

Lip gloss: L’Oreal Colour Juice Lip gloss in Melon Punch. I have so many of these lip glosses. I love them to death. The darker colors actually show up on me and the formula lasts longer than any of my other lip glosses. Melon Punch is a really cute orangey-melon color for summer. It looks great with tanned skin.

  1. I like voluminous mascara too. I switched to lash blast for awhile but I still like loreal’s mascara. I like revlon’s lipstick but not the matte as much. I think I like a shinier look. Nice list!

    • Thanks! I pretty much like all of Revlon’s lipsticks. I like L’Oreal and Milani too. Really, there are many great drugstore lipsticks. Even Wet n Wild lipsticks aren’t so bad. :)

  2. Love the look of those Hard Candy items! Wish they were more available where I live, I’d give them a try (Norway). Have a wonderful day!

    • I wish they were available where you live also! The Hard Candy makeup is only sold here at Walmart stores. Perhaps they will expand later on as I know the line is really popular. I hope you’re having a wonderful day too. :)

  3. I love this post! I’m a huge fan of the Hard Candy primer too, and also the Revlon matte lipsticks. I swear they are the least drying matte lipsticks I have ever used.

BTW, I don’t know why you were not on my blog roll before, but you are certainly there now. I LOVE your blog and now that you’re on my blog roll it will make it so much easier for me to stalk your blog on a daily basis. Haha! :D

    • Hi Gianna! I love your blog too. Lovers of drugstore makeup unite! Since your vintage vault post the other day I’ve been trying to track down some Rouge Pulp (amazon has some!). I miss that stuff! Thank you for adding me to your blog roll. <3 <3 <3 :D

  4. I can send you some Boots Vanishing cream (though that might make it less cheap than grabbing it from the drugstore) :D

I’m coming over to New York in September and I’m already salivating at the thought of bargainous North American drugstore make-up.

    • You are so sweet! I managed to find it online at drugstore.com, so I have a stockpile on its way to me. Thank you for the offer though!

How does drugstore makeup in the UK compare with that in the US? I hope you have a wonderful trip in September! I’ve always wanted to visit New York (I’m in San Diego, CA). :)

  5. We have http://www.boots.com/ and http://www.superdrug.com/ stores everywhere, which do stock some nice things and your typical staples like Revlon and Maybelline, etc, etc. But we don’t get the same selection of shades you guys do (I feel especially sorry for all the black beauties over here – compared to the North American selection what’s available here is crap). And there are some very nice ‘posh’ drugstores with nice brands like http://www.garden.co.uk/ .. but the prices are to match too!

Stuff like NYX, Hard Candy, Urban Decay, Sonia Kashuk, etc, etc – no chance. And the selection of colours from Revlon and Maybelline (just for example) is much more limited.

San Diego? I’ve never been. I’ve been to NYC a couple of times, always for work. This time too!

    • Will you post pictures of your NYC haul? :) I checked out the Superdrug site. I’ve heard good things about Barry M and Sleek palettes.

  6. I’ve never used Barry M but m-up alley is making me want to try them out :) Their advertising puts me off because the models are always styled like 80s schoolgirls :D

I’ll definitely post pictures of my NYC haul! I’m trying very hard not to spend too much money before I go…

    • I’ve never seen Barry M ads but I can see how that would put you off from the brand, hahaha. I’ve only seen awesome pictures of their dazzle dusts taken by various bloggers. They also have quite a range of lipsticks to choose from. I can’t wait to see your NYC haul! It would be so much fun to go shopping there. :)
